My interest in designing and building furniture was sparked almost immediately after moving to Taos, NM in the fall of 1993. As I attempted to furnish my home (actually a single wide trailer), I became intrigued by the scraps of wood I was burning for heat and began to construct simple artistic pieces of furniture for myself with the only tools I owned; a swiss army knife and a hammer. In the years that followed, I was lucky enough to begin building store fixtures for my employer, Taos Mountain Outfitters.
As I developed a sharper awareness of furniture design and construction my own style began to emerge. Being largely self taught in both design and construction, my style is always evolving. As it continues to move forward, it seems to strongly echo the simple forms of the Shakers with an elegant Japanese sensibility. My work has also been influenced by the designs of Maloof, Krenov and Nakashima for each craftsman's sense of proportion and their attention to respectfully highlighting the wood's natural flow and beauty. I work primarily with American hardwoods, such as walnut, cherry, ash and figured maples from sustainably harvested forests. I also use small quantities of wenge, a gorgeously striped dark brown and black African wood, for use as handles and drawer pulls. The wood I thoughtfully select for each project is done so for consistent color as well as for dramatic and intriguing grain patterns. |
